Medgar Evers College (MEC), a nationally recognized leader in urban-serving education, is one of twenty-four units within the dynamic City University New York (CUNY) System. They are instructed by over 170 full-time dedicated faculty members who must maintain a portfolio of scholarship and research. Reporting to the Finance Controller, the Finance Payments Manager will oversee the day to day operations of the Accounts Payable Team to ensure payments are processed for Medgar Evers College and its related entities (Association, Auxiliary, Foundations, Childcare Center and Member Organizations in a timely manner. The Finance Payments Manager will be responsible for:

In addition to the CUNY Title Overview, the Finance Manager's duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Manage the Accounts Payable Department, spanning across Tax Levy and Non-Tax Levy Related Entities

  • Manage the operational functions of the department, including invoice processing, travel and expense report auditing and processing, financial disbursement and exception resolution

  • Develop procedures and practices that enhance the efficiency and customer service of the Accounts Payable Department make recommendations for improvement.

  • Evaluate business processes to eliminate redundancies related to disbursement processing

  • Recommend staffing requirements and creating staffing metrics

  • Hire and supervise staff and creating and implementing formal training sessions

  • Manage payment processing, month-end close procedures and storage/filling

  • Manage invoice entry process to ensure proper coding, invoice approval and timeliness for Medgar Evers College and its related entities

  • Working with the Accounting, Procurement, and Budget departments to troubleshoot problems concerning vendor payments, credit card reconciliations, reimbursements, etc.

  • Prepare financial, administrative, departmental, and operational reports and presentations

  • Perform high level, year-end, quarterly, monthly and ad-hoc analyses


Bachelor's Degree and six years' related experience required.

  • The preferred candidate will have demonstrated excellent qualities of strong work ethic as well as being a solid leader and team player.

  • Experience in a higher education setting is preferred, as is a strong knowledge of payable processing.

  • Knowledge of computer systems and software including word processing, spreadsheets, database, general ledger system and online systems is preferred.

  • Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills; great organizational skills; and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously is also preferred


Manages the financial activities of a College or major program.

  • Advises management regarding funding appropriateness and proposes fiscal solutions to resolve academic and/or administrative issues

  • Develops and recommends policies and controls to assure the responsible use of resources

  • Supports strategic planning processes; assesses outcomes and makes recommendations regarding resource allocations

  • Prepares and manages production of statistical/analytical reports pertinent to financial and operational activities

  • Assists in developing budgeting policies and procedures, and interprets University-wide policy

  • Liaisons with auditors and other internal and external agencies as necessary

  • May negotiate contracts

  • May hire, supervise and train finance and/or clerical staff and manage related administrative functions

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
