The CUNY School of Labor and Urban Studies (SLU) was established in 2018 as the 25th institution and the seventh professional school of The City University of New York. The new School builds upon and expands the work of the Joseph S. Murphy Institute, which has served the educational needs of working adults for nearly 35 years. The mission of SLU is to: 1) offer undergraduate and graduate programs in Labor and Urban studies to a diverse constituency, including adult learners and traditional-age students; 2) collaborate with other units of the University to expand higher educational opportunities to working adults while meeting the workforce development needs of New York City and State, and 3) serve the labor and broader community by conducting research, offering leadership development programs, hosting public forums and national conferences, and publishing a national journal to promote debate on issues critical to labor and working-class communities.

Reporting to the School's Director for the Center for Labor, Community, & Policy Studies the Administrative Coordinator will act as point person for inquiries/requests made to the Center; provide administrative support for meetings and office operations; update and carry out ongoing improvement of Center databases; maintain current and accurate information on Center websites; maintain Center archives and collections; maintain files generated by the Director's office; and, order supplies needed for Center projects and programs.

Including the CUNY Title Overview, other duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists with the promotion of programming over social media.

  • Conducts research for public programming and New Labor Forum (NLF).

  • Organizes logistics for forums and conferences, maintains RSVP, registration and outreach lists.

  • Orders review copies from publishers for book reviewers.

  • Ensures accurate records and timely billing for NLF bulk subscriptions.


Bachelor's Degree required.


  • Two years providing administrative support in an active and customer-facing office environment.

  • Previous experience in higher education setting.

  • Proven experience developing social media presence and expanding outreach efforts to new markets.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite for supporting office operations, including word processing, mail merges, creation of spreadsheets and presentations, and conducting research.

  • Broad knowledge of U.S. labor and/or allied movements preferred.

  • Excellent communication skills.

  • Proficiency in WordPress preferred.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a demanding work environment, carry out complex assignments and adapt to changing situations and priorities..


Supports projects, initiatives, and activities that impact an academic or administrative department.

  • Manages basic office functions such as communications, meeting schedules, work plans, staff assignments, and distributing information.

  • Collects data for, prepares, and distributes reports and presentations using word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation software.

  • Updates office databases, lists, and files to ensure completeness and accuracy; maintains current information on department web site(s); maintains department archives and collections.

  • Conducts internet and/or database research and performs basic systems queries to locate information related to department activities.

  • Maintains department fiscal plans and budgets; assists in budget administration and invoice processing.

  • Provides basic information, instructions, and materials as requested by students, faculty, and others who contact the department.

  • May supervise office staff and student workers.

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
