The Math & Science Resource Center (MSRC) at John Jay College supports the academic success of John Jay students enrolled in computer science, mathematics and science courses and fosters their development as active, independent learners. The Center serves thousands of students each year in individual and small group tutoring sessions and targeted interventions.

Reporting to the Director of Learning Technologies and Support, the Math and Science Resource Center Manager oversees the Center’s daily operations and manages a staff of approximately 46 employees, including two part-time coordinators, tutors, and Federal Work Study receptionists.

In addition to the duties in the "CUNY Title Overview" (see below), the MSRC Manager:

  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, and evaluates tutoring staff.

  • Researches, designs and implements an effective tutor training program informed by relevant theory, best practices, and national certification requirements.

  • Trains and assesses tutor performance.

  • Represents the MSRC at campus meetings that impact center offerings or student experience.

  • Develops, implements and maintains center policies and procedures.

  • Participates actively in professional development and stays informed about best practices in learning support.

We plan to hire a candidate for this position to start the job on July 1, 2019.


Bachelor's degree and six years' related experience required.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS The successful candidate will be a team player with demonstrated ability and extensive experience in academic support for urban college students. The ability to communicate clearly to students, faculty, administrators, and staff orally and in writing is a must.

Strong preference will be given to candidates with:

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. preferred.

  • Experience running a learning center for urban college students or well-versed in nationally-recognized academic support practices.


Manages program development and operations of a learning resource center.

  • Implements and monitors a comprehensive student support program based on targeted academic resources such as tutoring, remedial and/or other related support services

  • Prepares outcomes assessment to further develop center offerings; sets goals and objectives; and supports strategic plan

  • Creates, implements and delivers seminars, workshops and other programs to meet the needs of students and faculty

  • Collaborates with academic departments and other units to design, execute and improve center offerings

  • Oversees promotional material development and center communications utilizing various media formats

  • Prepares analytical and statistical reports for management

  • Manages professional, instructional and/or clerical staff; may administer department budget

  • May seek additional funding by identifying new revenue sources and grants

  • Performs related duties as assigned.
